The Republic of Ireland picked up a 1-1 draw with Sweden in their Euro 2016 opener on Monday at Paris’ famed Stade de France.
Wes Hoolahan notched the only goal of the evening for Irish while a Ciaran Clark own goal gave the Swedes their equalizer.Galaxy captain Robbie Keane went 12 minutes in the match as a second-half substitute.
Sweden controlled the tempo during the first half, but it was the Irish who opened the scoring in the 47th minute when Hoolahan launched an impressive right-footed volley into the back of the Swedes net. Down a goal, the Swedish pulled level when Zlatan Ibrahimović fired a cross that was deflected off the head of Clark into the back of the Irish net.
Keane entered the match in the 78th minute, but was unable to help the Irish find the winner.
The Irish return to action on Saturday when they take on group favorites Belgium in Bordeaux. Ireland’s match with the Belgians will kick off at 6 am PT.
