The Hero of the Match presented by Pirnia Law is United States Navy and World War Two veteran, Motor Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Petty Officer Barney Leone.
Born in 1924, Petty Officer Leone joined the Navy at the age of 18 as a motor machinist and was assigned to the U.S.S. Nemasket, a gasoline tanker assigned to dangerous missions of transporting gasoline to remote navy stations and to warships in the Pacific Fleet.
One of his main duties was manning one of the 20-millimeter guns onboard the ship, and during World War Two, the U.S.S. Nemasket was anchored offshore at the battle of iwo jima, which lasted 36 days and claimed more than 26,000 American casualties.
Throughout his distinguished military career he received many recognitions and awards including the Victory medal, American Theatre medal, and the Asiatic Pacific medal with two stars.
Petty Officer Leone has frequent speaking engagements and shares his life experiences with the younger generations. He proudly brings to events the flag which was flown on his ship.
The LA Galaxy thanks Barney and his family for his service and dedication to our country and community.
